Child Identification Kits
The Southern Pines Police Department offers Child Identification Kits to children ages 3-12. The kit allows for collection of information, prints, photographs and a DNA specimen. These items will help law enforcement personnel identify your child if he or she should become lost or reported missing.
Southern Pines Police Department personnel will be doing fingerprinting at the Children’s Fun Health Fair sponsored by Partners for Families and Children at Our Savior Lutheran Church on March 3, 2008.
Child Identification Tags
All too often, children get lost or separated from their guardian, or a situation occurs where a contact is needed in case of emergency. Since children rarely carry ID cards or any form of identification and often have no place to carry emergency contact information, it can be difficult for emergency services or other responsible adults to contact a guardian in a time of need.
The Southern Pines Police Department will provide – free of charge – two shoe lace ID tags for children up to 12 years of age. The purpose of the tag is to provide identification of your child and emergency contact information that can be securely carried in a way that will not impact the child’s normal routine. The tag is designed to be tied securely onto a shoe lace and contains a picture of the child as well as information on whom to contact in case of an emergency. NO PERSONAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE CHILD IS CONTAINED ON THE CARD. It is an easy way for parents and guardians to have peace of mind that, if their child has lost their way or becomes separated during a group or family outing, a person they designate can be contacted.
Child ID tags are made during community festivals and events. Simply bring the child to the event, fill out the Kids Corner Child ID Tag Form(PDF) and present it to the police officer or staff member coordinating the event. A digital picture of the child will be taken and your designated contact information will be printed on a plastic card. Two small cards will be printed, which can be tied to a shoelace or other appropriate location. Please note: Once the card has been printed, the information will be deleted. The Southern Pines Police Department does not maintain a database of any information obtained through this project.
Fatal Vision Goggles
Fatal Vision® is a specially designed and manufactured pair of goggles that simulate the visual impairment caused by alcohol or other drugs. Viewing through the goggles is rather clear, but confusing to the mind. The wearer experiences a loss of equilibrium, which is one of the effects of intoxication. Both the wearer and those observing are convinced that such impairment makes activities with known risks, such a driving vehicles, very dangerous.
The impact is lasting. The principle underlying the Fatal Vision® Program is to demonstrate how quickly impairment can turn fun into devastating consequences. (SOURCE: Innocorp)
This program allows participants to experience the feeling of having a blood alcohol concentration of .17% through the use of specially fitted goggles. Officers also demonstrate field sobriety tests to participants and talk about the dangers of drinking and driving.
Law Enforcement Explorers
The Southern Pines Police Department sponsors a Law Enforcement Explorer Post in conjunction with Learning for Life, a subsidiary of the Boy Scouts of America. The program is designed to educate the youth of the community about law enforcement and the criminal justice system and to encourage Explorers to develop the skills and desire necessary to serve in a public safety capacity.
The program is open to persons aged fifteen (15) to twenty (20). The selection process includes an interview by the Post Advisor, a review of qualifications and a background investigation.

Security Surveys
By taking a good look at your property with a focus on crime prevention, the police department can assist property owners with suggestions to make your property less of a target. An officer will be assigned to visit the property to review all aspects of the location and to provide input for physical security or, if a business, policy improvements that the property owner or manager may wish to put into place.
Vial of Life
The Vial of Life is a program that is designed to provide Emergency Service Personnel with time saving medical information. Participants in this program fill out a form containing critical medical and contact information that can be used in the case of an emergency. The information is placed in containers that resemble medication bottles. The container is then placed in a standard place in the participant’s home and vehicle. Usually, the refrigerator and glove box are the places that emergency responders will look for the Vial of Life. Stickers are provided to alert emergency responders of the Vial of Life location.
• Remember to take your Vial of Life along in case of evacuation during a disaster.
• Remember to update your information sheet when medical or contact information changes.

Badge & Blaze
Badge and Blaze Fun Day is an opportunity for boys and girls ages 8-14 to play in a softball or basketball game with members of the Police Department and the Fire Department. National Night Out
National Night Out is a night dedicated to cooperation and crime prevention for both residents and Police.
National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs; Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. The 2008 National Night Out was held on August 5 at Memorial Park from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Remembrance of September 11, 2001
The JROTC group from Pinecrest High School holds a remembrance service each September 11. In 2006 they chose to honor law enforcement and the SPPD with a flag-folding and presentation ceremony. They did so on the morning of September 11th, in the courtyard full of students and the JROTC class in dress formation.
