High School Police Academy

The High School Police Academy is a five week course for high school juniors and seniors.  It is dHigh School Poice Academy Badgeesigned to provide an introduction to the Southern Pines Police Department and the law enforcement and criminal justice professions as career choices.  The academy is an opportunity for participants to learn firsthand from experienced officers the duties and responsibilities of law enforcement personnel and the requirements for entering this demanding field of public service.  Classes are held one evening a week for approximately two (2) hours. The sessions are taught by patrol officers, detectives, telecommunicators and other law enforcement personnel.  Highlights include a mock entry demonstration by the Special Response Team (SRT) and a demonstration by the K-9 Unit.  Participants are provided the opportunity to ride along with an on-duty patrol officer.  Participants under the age of eighteen (18) must have permission or their parent or legal guardian.  

The goal of the Southern Pines High School Police Academy is to reach out to the youth of the community, develop positive relationships, expose them to various aspects of police work and mentor those that are interested in pursuing law enforcement  and criminal justice related careers.

The academy is open to High School Juniors & Seniors wh
• Are age sixteen (16) to eighteen (18)
• Are a Resident of Southern Pines
• In good standing at school and in the community
• Have approval of their parent or legal guardian (A signed permission/waiver is required)
• Have a recommendation from a school faculty member

A review of the applicant’s background and criminal history, if any, is required.  The requirements may be waived or modified upon review and approval of the Chief of Police.

The High School Police Academy is scheduled for October 2 through October 30, 2008.
