Explorations: A Forum for Adults
An ongoing lecture and discussion series for adults, featuring a variety of informative and entertaining speakers who are experts in their field. Programs are held on Sunday afternoons from 3:00 to 4:00 pm and are free and open to the public. The series is sponsored by Friends of Southern Pines Public Library.

On Sunday, November 16, 2008, join us as the library presents "Social Networking- It's Not Just for Teens". In this program participants will learn how social networking sites such as myspace or facebook can help them find an old classmate, true love or a new job.

On Sunday, October 19, 2008, many joined us as we explored Knitting for the 21st Century. If you "yarn" for more information on the topic, the Library has serveral resources (PDF) that may help you put it all together. 

 Leslie Dean of FirstHealth presented "Inheriting Your Health: What Your Family's Past Says About Your Future" (PDF) on Sunday, September 14, 2008. Visitors learned how genetics and family of origin/upbringing could affect their future health status. Tools were also provided for creating and tracking their family's "health tree."  

A crowd was excited to meet author J.A. Jance  (PDF) on Saturday, August 2, 2008. Jance is the bestselling author of two series: the J.P. Beaumant mysteries, and the Joanna Brady mysteries.

At the Spring Plant Exchange (PDF) on Sunday, April 13, Moore County Master Gardener Dolores Muller was on hand to answer questions and dish the “dirt” on gardening in the Sandhills. She also gave a presentation on drought tolerant plants.

Losing a child is devastating; losing a child to suicide, even more so. Iris Angle walked, cycled and journaled her way across the country in order to work through her grief and to create a lasting tribute to her son Eric. A group heard her story on February 10, 2008, in a "A Walk to Remember: One Mother's Legacy" (PDF).

Oldies and Goodies! Classic Films and Afternoon Tea
The library has started a program which will give you a chance to look again at some "oldies, but goodies!"
 
 
On Thursday, November 13, 2008 the library will present "Holiday" (PDF). Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn star in this love story with a twist.
 
On Thursday, October 9, 2008, the library presented "Ghost Breakers" (PDF). Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard star in this 1940 classic comic horror film.
 
On Thursday, September 11, 2008, the library presented "Love Me Tonight" (PDF). Starring Maurice Chevalier and Jeanette MacDonald, this film is one of the greates musicals of the 1930's.
 
On Thursday, July 17, 2008, the library presented "Grand Hotel" (PDF), one of the first true soap operas ever produced by Hollywood, and the 1932 winner for best picture. Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, and John Barrymore star as a drunk doctor, an eccentric dancer, and a terminally-ill bookkeeper cross paths. 
 
In the 1943 romantic comedy “The More the Merrier”(PDF), director George Stevens pokes fun at the World War II housing shortage in Washington, D.C. We watched the sparks fly between stars Jean Arthur and Joel McCrea on Thursday, May 8, 2008.

In their only appearance together, Carole Lombard and Clark Gable star in the 1932 screwball comedy "No Man of Her Own"(PDF), which was presented on Thursday, April 10, 2008.  This classic is the story of a schemer on the run who marries a small-town librarian with a taste for the wild-side.

The movies presented at our "Oldies and Goodies" programs in the past are available for check-out at the library! Be sure to check out these DVDs:

"Tall in the Saddle," a 1944 western starring "The Duke."
"Ball of Fire," starring Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck.
"The Sea Hawk," a 1940 adventure film featuring Errol Flynn as a dashing pirate.
"So Proudly We Hail," a 1943 drama focusing on a group of US Army nurses in Hawaii in December 1941.
"The Old Dark House," a comic-horror classic from 1932.
"The Little Foxes," the 1941 film adaptation of the Lillian Hellman play.
"Out of the Past" featuring Robert Mitchum.
"Lust for Life," starring Kirk Douglas as artist Vincent Van Gogh.
"An American in Paris" with Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron.
"Rosemarie" with Jeannette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy.

Adult Mystery Book Discussion

Do you enjoy a good whodunit? Join us for "Murder by the Book," an Adult Mystery Book Discussion Program. The next book discussion will be on Saturday, October 25, 2008 at 3:00 pm. Participants will discuss A Beautiful Blue Death (PDF) by Charles Finch. See the desk to reserve a copy! Tax Help at the Library
A.A.R.P. trained volunteers will be available at the library to assist middle and low-income seniors in filing their tax returns beginning in February. See tax flier (PDF) for further information.
